According to the NME, Azealia Banks is the coolest person in music this year.
This is big news, as it’s the first time a POC has won the title - Kanye was once #3 and Janelle was #2 last year (FYI: as for women and the LGBTQ community, Beth Ditto won a while back).I’ve avoided the NME since my 12th birthday (understandably…) but I really have to agree with them on this one. It’s just a shame it’s inevitable that next year the winner will be some middleclass white dude who plays guitar in a below-average hyped-up indie band.
Alas, fingers crossed the ever-flaky NME continue to support real fucking talent in the shape of Miss Azealia Banks.
A well deserved win, if I do say so myself.
I *love* her! And yes, the doubts about NME continuing to support anything other than mainstream-indie-acceptable are well founded.

Excuse me while I lose it for a moment.
SHIRIN NESHAT IS THE SHIT AND YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HER.
Shirin Neshat uses her photo and video work to elaborate a poetic vision, direct and non-judgmental, of the condition of women in fundamentalist Islamic societies. The artist penetrates the intimate and emotional space of these women who are the first to suffer ideological pressures, torn between a need for social cohesion and the desire for personal freedom.
Incredible photography and video installation work* from a contemplative Iranian-American artist.
*I love the part in the middle of the female’s vocal where you can really hear the link to other musical cultures. The ululation and phrasing reminds me of Thracian polyphony; it’s sublime.
