One serendipitous day, on a walk to the metro, these tones were repeating themselves everywhere. On a rusting column, a torn poster on brickwork… over and over and over again, everything was golden tan and rust. (so of course I took pictures ;) )
Check out the photosmith’s tumblr and website, and consider supporting a fascinating project on the art nude. Do it!

“Well, there’s hours of time on the telephone line…”
Let’s just forget what the rest of this lyric says, ok? When I see these telephone poles, that’s exactly what I think of. How my voice gets carried to you. How hours pass and it all feels so effortless, so good. Love. I absolutely love that.

There are times I miss living in places where religion is so overtly woven into the everyday fabric of life. Here, while I am surrounded constantly by religious symbolism, the schism between church and state was so incisive and quick that it turned society on its head. My country is so new, its history and traditions, borrowed and contemporary, so relatively fresh. There are times when I miss a deeper sense of history, the layered complexities of ancient times. We have winter here, but there are times where I long for the rainy season, the way it locks you down in a different way.
This image reminds me of so many men and fewer women that I’ve known, times spent in quiet contemplation, sharing a meal together, of the rainy season and begging bowls. The symbiosis of religion and community; each sustaining the other. It reminds me of what it means to give it all up, and yearn solely for a release from a worldly existence.
It reminds me of a time in my life when I was there (wherever *there* was, there were a few), and not here, and how I will be somewhere other than here again. That this moment is everything and nothing, all at once.

I’m not so sure about that. I think it just makes us long for what were are not, what we don’t have. You know, for right now? I’m just going to celebrate the me yet to come.* That being said, I really like Daft Punk.**
In other news, what the fuck am I going to do with all of these books?

*Heart, another ‘Body Electric’ reference, just for you!
**But I really love Kraftwerk. I think it was ‘Die Roboter’ that made me think of them at the same time.

I’m not usually one for shots like this, but, I can feel the sleek of that fabric against my skin, feel the shift of weight onto one side…

I love the thought of two such vibrant and gifted artists coming together, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. I can’t imagine what it must have been like to be in a relationship like that - how do two creative people with such strong visions co-exist, particularly in light of her multiple health issues? Theirs was not an easy union, by all accounts.
I love this adaptation of a very particular classic pose in portraiture, shaped by his voice and vision. The fruit for flowers, the bright tropical blooms in the background, the reclining female with strappy heels, dressed for a night out rather than a day in the studio. The bright colours, so warm and luscious. It’s like Matisse’s odalisques or even Manet’s Olympia, except in this case our flaneur eyes his subject in full dress, the scene is more personally domestic with the addition of a child’s portrait in the background. This is no boudoir, despite the trappings of bourgeousie. It’s a family home, and our expectation of a reclining nude has been subverted.
All of this to say, I really enjoy Diego Rivera.
