This article kills me. I just about fell over laughing when I first read it.

I guarantee that no girl will marry a poor guy because every girl wants the life of a princess

I am not entirely sure what generation this girl grew up in, but, when I was little, talk on the school yard was more of the ‘I’m NEVER going to get married because I don’t want to get divorced like my parents’ variety.

I’m not saying boys should have the life of work and disstress (sic) because they are humans but obviously their wives won’t be bringing home the money

I’m wincing. Cringing. And praying that this is a parody.

The male slut: a rare breed

The word “slut” has been reclaimed, thanks to this book: amazon.co.uk/Ethical… I was squeamish about it at first, but now I am happy to be a male slut.

Thank you, mistersimon. That book is a fabulous resource. However, it takes people to reclaim a word, not a book. I understand that people embrace their inner slut all the time, and, I understand what they are trying to say about that. While male slut is a novel appropriation of the word, not something we hear every day, I question the need for the term ‘slut’ period.

With regards to the concept of ‘male sluttiness’, an informal glance at the bastion of popular terminology defined (in North America)*, the Urban Dictionary, points out that slut is indeed a very loaded term, still, and one that is predominantly used to derogatively describe female sexual behaviour.

Embrace your inner slut

A quick glance at the SINGLE page and single entry for ‘male slut’ reveals a grand total of 151 total comments. This would indicate that the entry did not warrant much comment, nor was the single description provided contested.

Now, cruising on over to ‘slut’, it’s interesting to note that the first entry reads simply:

A woman with the morals of a man

(They say that like it’s a bad thing!).

This first entry, one of six different entries on the first page, with forty more pages of entries that follow, has approximately 55 000 comments.

Yeah. Even with repeat visits (the same person visiting the site, and hitting the ‘vote’ button repeatedly) 55 000 responses to a measly 151 is quite telling, is it not?

Slut is a word used primarily to denigrate. I don’t need to re-appropriate it. Sure, it has a place in sex, in the bedroom, in my play, but, I do not feel the need to label myself a slut in the day-to-day order to show how ‘self-empowered’ I am.

However, I have no problem if anybody else does! I am primarily concerned with a healthy, guilt-free enjoyment of sex and sexuality, no matter what you call yourself.

*For those that are not so adept at detecting sarcasm, I do intend this somewhat tongue in cheek. However, I do think there is something to there as well. mistersimon’s book reccomendation is stellar though, and I do suggest checking it out!
